A Small Helping Hand

Eva walked down the frozen sidewalk. Her wool lined gloves were stuffed deeply into a mink muff. She wore a full length mink coat and a wool plaid scarf wrapped tightly around her mouth and neck. “I should have listened to the driver and worn my hat,” she muttered to the bodyguard beside her.
The wind stung her cheeks and forehead. She wished she hadn’t worn the boots with heals, it was slick and she’d almost fallen twice. “Is the car close?” Eva asked.
“Yes, ma’am, right behind us. I believe we have a young girl up ahead,” he pointed.
“Miss, I’m Eva,” she said, almost in a whisper. The young girl looked up from the cardboard box, shivering. Her lips were blue and fingers bright red and chapped. Just then a smaller head popped out of the box. He was wrapped in an old, holey, woolen blanket. Eva gasped, “Eddy, get the stuff, quickly,” she breathed.
Eddy pulled blankets, coats, gloves, hats, and boots from the trunk of the car. Eva wrapped the girl of not more than sixteen in a brand new coat. She handed her the muff, which the girl buried her face into. Eva went to work on the little boy. “Eddy pour them each a cup of hot vegetable soup,” Eva commanded.
“Please, come with me and let us help you,” Eva pleaded. The girl shook her head, but never spoke. The car pulled away from the curb, but not before the tent, sleeping bags, food, and other personal necessities had been delivered.
