Terrifying Job
Charles climbed into the driver’s side door
of the ambulance. He fired up the engine and flipped the toggle switch for the
emergency lights. He avoided the siren, all the paramedics knew that the sirens
alerted the nuts, who liked to interfere with their rescues, especially in the
part of town where he was going. Last time he’d been on a run down there the
gangs took sport in shooting out the emergency lights. He couldn’t forget the
bullets whizzing over his head.
His partner picked up the radio mic and
spoke clearly a combination of numbers into it. A female dispatcher
acknowledged their codes and they were off, speeding down the streets to their
destination. Not knowing who or what to expect.
“John, why is it we are the only unit they
will send south of town?” Charles asked his rhetorical question.
“Because, we are the only idiots that will
go,” he chuckled.
