Puzzles, Love Them

Molly picked up the paring knife and carefully slid it between the top and bottom of the box along all four sides. The lid now separated from the bottom and easily came off. She propped the picture up at the end of the table. It was a bright field of golden poppies. She began sorting the puzzle pieces right side up.

“The straight edges go in this pile, the solid orange go in this pile, the blue sky goes in this pile, and everything else over here.” Her fingers nimbly worked, sorting the small delicate odd shaped pieces into their prospective categories. “I’m going to start with the edge.” She took all the edge pieces and regrouped them into blue sky, orange and yellow flower parts, and “Oh look, a small pool of water over here in the corner,” she exhaled. When she was done she started with one of the corner pieces. “Here’s the same color, nipple, straight edge, and it fits. Phew! I’m on my way,” she grinned. “Same color, straight edge, receiver for the nipple… And it fits. This piece has gray blue and green and this one is green. Oh, and this one has a tiny orange tip. I’m into the flowers. It’s going to get harder now!” she sighed.

This went on for hours. Finally she was left with the last four or five pieces and the puzzle would be completed. They were all solid blue and finished filling in the sky. “I’m almost done, this one goes here, this crazy pokey looking one goes here, and this one with flat edges fits in here. Sweet one last piece… NO! This can’t be! Where’s the last piece?” she groaned loudly. She looked under the table, on the chairs, under the box. It was nowhere to be found. Molly was devastated how do you put an entire 1000 piece puzzle together and not have one piece. She inhaled and exhaled, closed her eyes, “What a waste of time…”

“Hey, Molly I rescued this from the dog. She was chewing on it,” her mom said, handing the tiny puzzle piece with two nipples on it. “It’s a little wet, but not bad… Oh, look, it goes right here!”

“Mom, that was the last piece,” Molly said disappointed. “I wanted to finish it…” Her mother walked away giggling.
