Three in a Row

 Seconds Count
I sat at the dining table waiting for Hector to make his appearance. It never failed! He was always late, but I loved him and so I would wait forever, I supposed. I checked my watch; ten after… I fiddled with my glass of iced tea, and checked my watch again; eleven after the hour.

“Can I get you anything?” the waiter asked politely.

“No, Sam he’s late again,” I shrugged and exhaled.

“Well, he’ll be here soon,” he motioned for me to look out the window.

Hector was waiting across the street for the light to change. Our eyes met, mine angry and his smiling. I pointed at my watch and he shrugged raising his hand. He was holding a small jewelry box. “Will you marry me?” he mouthed, grinning from ear to ear.

I stood, rattling the table, and nodding animatedly. I searched for the front door and was out on the street when the light changed. He stepped off the curb in a run. I ran toward him. I could think of nothing but being in his arms. Then ‘bam,’ a car sped around the corner taking out several pedestrians. Hector was one of them. The box bounced across the street and landed under a car.

I screamed. My happiness dispelled. I knew all was lost. When I reached Hector he had blood leaking from his nose and down his chin. His eyes were closed. “Hector! Hector!” I screamed, shaking him.

I heard a small grunt and air escape from his lips, they slowly turned up on the corners. His hand reached up and softly stroked my cheek. “I love you Ally girl,” he said softly. I felt a tap on my shoulder. A stranger handed me the small box. I was stunned beyond comprehension in the last few seconds. I’d raced through one extreme emotion to another, and now I knew nothing would ever be the same.

An Old Flame

"Hey, is that Garrett?” Sadie whispered, punching Janice in the ribs.

“Yeah, it is. He looks pretty good twenty years out of high school,” she said softly, nodding her head.
 “Didn’t you two date once?”

“Yes we did… How do I look? Is he coming this way?” Sadie tittered, turning her back to him, plumping her hair.

“I believe that he is. He’s spotted you… Now turn around he’s here!” Janice poked Sadie. She slowly turned to face him, smiling.

“Hi, Janice… have you seen Dash? I was supposed to meet him here,” Garrett asked.

“No, I haven’t,” Janice answered, glancing back at Sadie. Her face was long with disappointment that saddened her eyes. “Oh, Garrett, you remember Sadie don’t you?”

He stared at her for a long moment and all at once you could see the light of recognition beam. “Yes, of course I do… Well, I didn’t at first, but it’s been a long time. How are you? You know I’ve actually thought about you several times over the years,” he babbled.

Heartbroken, Sadie said, “Nice recovery,” and hugged his neck. “How have you been?”

Olives and Martinis
I swayed and wobbled on the bar-stool. “How dare he pack and walk out with her on his arm… Well he hasn’t heard the last from me,” I slurred, swearing, and draining the last swallow from the martini glass.

“Barkeep, I’ll have another…” I ordered, feeling my head swirl.

“I think you’ve had enough, ma’am. May I get you a cab or some dinner?” the bartender suggested.

“No… Don’t you know if you would put olives in the martini, I would have dinner and cocktails,” I barked.

Below please enjoy some book reviews:
I enjoyed reading this book. Just enough of everything...romance, suspense, excitement. The storyline kept me entertained that it was a fast read for me...I did not want to put it down. The only disappointing thing about the book that I can honestly say is...that it ended!

Wonderful story. When I first started it, I thought, oh no, not my type of reading, but it grabbed me from the start and I couldn't wait to keep reading. Can't wait for another book from this great author.

This book has everything I wanted from a fun piece of fiction- love, loss, religion, existential questions, and pirates. It was very entertaining to read and think about afterwards. Well done, Ms. Cooper!
