Secrets

Joey threw his head back and inhaled sharply. “How could she do this to me?” He slicked back his hair and fought off the tears. “The worst part is, she’s dead and I can’t even ask her… why?” He punched a hole through her picture hanging on the wall of their bedroom. “I can’t believe she did this to our family and never told me!”
The papers from the attorney lay sprawled across the dining room table. Her Last Will and Testament explained that her estate would go to her first husband and family. Joey and their daughter were to receive a stipend of $5000.00 per month and she had deeded the house they had shared to Joey.
The letter accompanying the legal documents was short and to the point.
My Dearest Joey,
I’m sorry, but I was married to Charles Maven long before we ever met. We have three children together. As you know, Joey, I travel a lot for my job and I fell in love with you that day on the beach when you and Alex were flying the kite. Please try to understand! My world was complete when we met, but my estate must go to Charles and my children. I hope the house and money will help you forgive me. I truly love you all.  Signed Carla.
Joey wadded up the letter, chucked it at the broken picture, and stormed out of the room.
