The Sleuth

“You better get up here!” the maid reported to the house detective.

“Why? What have you found?” he groaned over the phone. “I’m rather busy.”

“He’s back!” she said, hanging up.

Detective Joe swung his feet off the desk and folded up his newspaper. He slammed it onto the desktop and slid his old wooden chair on rollers away from the desk, standing with a sigh. “This is a waste of time! Let the poor guy have a warm place to sleep every now and again,” he mumbled to himself. “But I am curious…” He grabbed his coat and hat and left.

“Joe, this must stop! Whoever this guy is he has to be caught! After all that is why we pay you…” the hotel manager stormed off, punching a velvet coat into his chest.

Joe caught the maroon jacket, squeezing it between his thumb and forefinger. “Strange color for a man,” he muttered. A water bottle half empty sat on the bed stand and a piece of torn envelope remained next to it. He looked under the bed for the other half. It wasn’t there and the trashcans were empty.

“Hey, did you take the trash out already,” he asked a maid standing at the door. She shook her head ‘no’. “Are you the one that called me?” again she shook her head. Her wide eyes, beads of perspiration, and heavy breathing didn’t escape his notice either.

Upon further examination he could see a pale glossy pink lip balm on the edge of the water bottle. He picked up the piece of envelop and sniffed it. It smelled dirty, papery. He deduced that the envelop had contained a stack of bills.

“What’s your name?” Joe directed his question again to the maid at the door.

“Molly, sir,” she whispered.

“Well, Molly…” he said holding up the coat by the shoulders, measuring it to her slight frame and then handing her the coat. He turned and took the bottle and envelop off the nightstand, with his index finger he swiped the lipstick from the rim and rubbed it on her cheek next to her lips. It matched. He then handed her the torn envelop leaned over and whispered into her ear. “Do yourself a favor and do your extra business in another hotel,” and walked out the door.

She watched him leave with a tear in her eye, thankful he hadn’t turned her over to the night manager.

Is Any Religion a Myth?

On a planet in another galaxy lived a race of people that hadn’t see the light of day in centuries. The surface had been used to the point that the land had become toxic and so the citizenry had to move underground. They hadn’t learned from their past mistakes and continued to use up each other and everything they touched. Strife and chaos were the norm. Man and woman had no separate identity and children ran rampant without guidance or leadership.

One morning a traveler appeared from a strange flying object. He wore hard impenetrable clothing that covered his chest, arms, and legs. He carried a weapon that stopped man where he stood. And he used it against a group that tried to molest him. The people of the underground were startled for a moment, but they were so consumed with their own selfish desires that they continued without a care for their fallen friends.

The traveler watched the people for a time, observing their behaviors. He didn’t like that they sought pleasure at will, whether it was steeling food out of the mouths of children or physical. He made a decision to share his knowledge.

“Those of you that are tired of this life of take, take, take and where no one has responsibility, come with me,” he spoke with reverence and hope. A number of the adults stopped what they were doing and followed this strange man.

“A true society with honor and love has to follow a few simple rules,” he began.
Some of the people in the crowd moaned and even turned and walked away, but those that stayed continued to listen. “First you must believe in a supreme being.” The citizenry stared at each other bewildered. “I know that sounds… Well, extreme, but if you follow the rules you want some reward for your devotion. Am I right?” They muttered and nodded. A few more people stepped away.

“Second, you must do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Laughter broke out in the crowd.

“I’ll do unto you woman, fix me some grub, and then lie on your back,” the lecherous man in the front row gurgled, grabbing a young girl in the crowd. She struggled, fighting him off.

“And when do you wait on me hand and foot, fixing my food, and being available if I want pleasure?” she snapped at him. The crowd cheered her. “What is this reward for believing in you?” she asked.

“A Kingdom where there is no pain, hunger, sickness, with total beauty and peace,” he said softly. The crowd nodded and murmured amongst themselves.

“What do we call you?” the same girl asked.

“Oh, it’s not me. I’m just the messenger, but you can call him Holy Being,” he said, reaching out his hand to the young maiden who had asked all the questions. She took it gladly. He walked her through the crowd and into a tunnel. The crowd followed.

“All those that pledge to follow this new life, please follow me. And those that don’t, feel free to stay behind,” he waited for a moment and then continued through the cave. They emerged into the bright sunlight, where the planet had rejuvenated itself and flourished with vegetation and streams of water. The crowd gasp with appreciation and looked upon the stranger with acceptance.

“We will be the first to commit to each other and set the example of living a respectful life before the Holy Being,” he whispered to her only.  She agreed.

The few eventually turned into the majority and the once chaotic society below ground became a well-organized productive lot, with more happiness and peace than they had ever hoped for. Oh, there were a few rebellious jerks, but they served to remind the civilized from where they had come and the myth was dispelled forever.

Merry Christmas from TD Cooper

Even though I didn't write this story it is worth a read.

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Enjoy!

The True Story of Rudolph

A man named Bob May, depressed and brokenhearted, stared out his drafty apartment window into the chilling December night. His 4-year-old daughter, Barbara, sat on his lap quietly sobbing. Bob's wife, Evelyn, was dying of cancer.

Little Barbara couldn't understand why her mommy could never come home. Barbara looked up into her dad's eyes and asked, "Why isn't Mommy just like everybody else's Mommy?" Bob's jaw tightened and his eyes welled with tears. Her question brought waves of grief, but also of anger. It had been the story of Bob's life. Life always had to be different for Bob.

Small when he was a kid, Bob was often bullied by other boys. He was too little at the time to compete in Sports. He was often called names he'd rather not remember. From childhood, Bob was different and never seemed to fit in. Bob did complete college, married his loving wife and was grateful to get his job as a copywriter at Montgomery Ward during the Great Depression. Then he was blessed with his little girl. But it was all short-lived. Evelyn's bout with cancer stripped them of all their savings and now Bob and his daughter were forced to live in a two-room apartment in the Chicago slums.

Evelyn died just days before Christmas in 1938.

Bob struggled to give hope to his child, for whom he couldn't even afford to buy a Christmas gift. But if he couldn't buy a gift, he was determined to make one - a storybook! Bob had created an animal character in his own mind and told the animal's story to little Barbara to give her comfort and hope.

Again and again Bob told the story, embellishing it more with each telling. Who was the Character? What was the story all about? The story Bob May created was his own autobiography in fable form.

The character he created was a misfit outcast like he was. The name of the character? A little reindeer named Rudolph, with a big shiny nose. Bob finished the book just in time to give it to his little girl on Christmas Day. But the story doesn't end there.

The General manager of Montgomery Ward caught wind of the little storybook and offered Bob May a nominal fee to purchase the rights to print the book. Wards went on to print, “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and distribute it to children visiting Santa Claus in their stores. By 1946 Wards had printed and distributed more than six million copies of Rudolph. That same year, a major Publisher wanted to purchase the rights from Wards to print an updated version of the book.

In an unprecedented gesture of kindness, the CEO of Wards returned all rights back to Bob May. The book became a best seller. Many toy and marketing deals followed and Bob May, now remarried with a growing family, became wealthy from the story he created to comfort his grieving daughter. But the story doesn't end there either.

Bob's brother-in-law, Johnny Marks, made a song adaptation to Rudolph. Though the song was turned down by such popular vocalists as Bing Crosby and Dinah Shore, it was recorded by the singing cowboy, Gene Autry. "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer" was released in 1949 and became a phenomenal success, selling more records than any other Christmas song, with the exception of "White Christmas."

The gift of love that Bob May created for his daughter so long ago kept on returning back to bless him again and again. And Bob May learned the Lesson, just like his dear friend Rudolph, that being different isn't so bad. In fact, being different can be a blessing.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

Christmas Favorites

I remember the day Mom called all of my siblings and me into the kitchen. She fed us Christmas cookies and hot chocolate as we sat visiting. It had been an extremely difficult time of year.  Grandma had passed the season before and she had always been an intricate part of our celebration.

My two twin brothers seemed to be at each other’s throats, unusual since they never fought. I remember them ganging up on the rest of us most of the time. My oldest sister seemed to spend more time in her room with the door closed and my baby sister fussed all the time. I just felt hollow.

“Okay, now that I have your attention and you aren’t bickering. I’d like each of you to write your most enjoyable thing about Christmas,” she looked each of us in the eye and handed us a card with holly, poinsettias, and little Christmas trees outlining it.

I thought for a long time about my favorites and which order to put them in, to come up with the one. I heard Molly shout out, “Santa Claus!” Mom wrote it down for her. Yeah, I enjoyed the tradition of a secret magical man spreading joy to the world, but it wasn’t the one favorite.

Kenny began to write on his card and then handed it to Mom. “All the fabulous food, candies, and cookies!” she read. Yeah, I enjoyed not being restricted from as many sweets as I was during the rest of the year.

Bobby took his pen and covered his card with his arm. He got real close to the card and wrote, “Going shopping for everyone after I’ve worked hard all year to earn money. I like to see their faces light up!” Yeah, I found a lot of pleasure in that scene too.

Kim looked up at everyone and scribbled something on the card. “Read it!” Mom instructed.

“I enjoy the whole family and friends getting together to celebrate all through the season from Thanksgiving to New Year’s,” she sighed. “But I miss Grandma this year.” We all nodded and felt a little sting in our hearts.

It was my turn to write on my card. What was left? Slowly my pen started to move, “I am thankful that Jesus was born on this day to give us a reason to celebrate all the things that my family mentioned.”

Mom took all of our cards and poked a whole in each, tied a ribbon through it, and hung them on the tree. “Now, every time you feel unhappy or cheated in some way I want you to go and read what you have said here today.”

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
