Pink is Beautiful
The white sterile halls were stacked with gurneys. The less
injured were sitting on the floor in any empty space they could find. Doctors
and nurses ran from patient to patient doing their best to treat the critical
first. Sheila, the newest nurse on the floor began to feel overwhelmed by the
intensity of the situation.
“Sheila, take a break! You’re as white as a sheet,” Ms. Chancellor,
the head nurse said.
“I’ll be alright I just need some air,” Sheila mumbled.
“Get some and get back here,” Ms. Chancellor commanded.
Sheila pushed the button on the wall, the big glass doors
swung open, and she stepped out into the cold brisk air. Breathing deep, she
looked up into the cloud filled sky, “If I only had the power to really help
these people,” she whispered.
She took one more deep cleansing breath and hit the button
on the wall… at that moment a bolt of lightning shot out of the sky, hitting
the switch and causing sparks to fly in all directions. Sheila was knocked to
the ground with smoke puffing out around her.
“Sheila! Sheila! Wake up girl!” Ms. Chancellor patted her
cheeks and spoke urgently. “Are you okay?”
“What happened?” Sheila asked bewildered and sitting up.
“The Automatic door exploded. We don’t know for sure, but
are you alright?” she repeated.
“I think so. I feel fine, just a little tingly.”
“Let’s get her inside and check her out,” Ms. Chancellor
insisted to the orderly.
Sheila sat on her own gurney watching the many people hurt
from the highway pile-up. A woman moaned something incoherent. Sheila jumped to
her aide. She caressed her hand. All of a sudden the woman’s gash stopped
bleeding and sealed. The color returned to her cheeks and her internal pain was
gone. Sheila realized her pain and discomfort had disappeared, also. She moved
to another injured man and held his hand. He became healed, she touched several
more people lining the walls and they all sat up beaming. It was a miracle, but
she knew she must keep it a secret.

REVIEW
Engaging Summer Read
By B. T. Woodward on April 7, 2015

This book has everything I wanted from a fun piece of fiction- love, loss, religion, existential questions, and pirates. It was very entertaining to read and think about afterwards. Well done, Ms. Cooper!
