Mornings?!

“Jenny! Jenny get up! Jennifer Louise get out of that bed!” Mom yelled.

She rolled to the edge of the bed, placed her feet squarely on the floor, and stood. “Nope… Not awake,” Jenny muttered, flopping back across the mattress. She rubbed her eyes, smacked her lips, and yawned. “What time is it anyway?” The clock read 5:15. “Mom, why so early? I don’t have to be at school for at least two hours,” she grumbled and rolled over, placing the pillow over her head.

“Jennifer are you up? The car is leaving in ten minutes for swim practice.”

“What is she yelling about now…?” Jenny laid on the bed trying to force herself back to sleep, as her mind continued to become more and more alert. “Swim practice! Did she say swim practice?” She jumped to attention. “I have practice this morning!” she groaned.

Her bag sat in the corner of her room. She unzipped it. The smell of moldy, stale chlorine burst from the satchel. “Ugh!” she complained throwing damp towels on the floor. She found her moist suit underneath and brought it to her nose. “This smells wonderful,” she grimaced sarcastically, but stepped into the suit and pulled it up wiggling until the straps settled on her shoulders. Next she grabbed her sweatshirt and Ugg boots. Jenny ran to the cupboard and selected two dry towels, stuffing them into the bag. Lastly she double checked for her cap and goggles.

Mom was already out in the car, warming it up. Her brother sat in the backseat with his head laid back. Jenny jumped in the front seat, slammed the door, and chewed on the cinnamon toast she found on the counter as she flew passed out to the garage.

They pulled up to the pool. Coach was standing in the drive. “Chlorine is below safe levels… Practice is cancelled this morning. Be here this afternoon,” he said with an air of condescension.

“I could still be in bed,” Jenny complained.
