Choices That Ruin Life

She stumbled through the kitchen door, shading her eyes from the bright morning sun. Smacking her lips to moisten her dry mouth, and reached for the refrigerator door. The light added to her discomfort. After rummaging through the old-take out boxes and not finding what she wanted, she slammed the door shut. Where had she left the vodka bottle?

Cupboard doors flew open and cans of food were haphazardly pushed out of the way. She couldn’t help it. She knew the drinking would ruin her. She had even tried to stop imbibing, but her heart wasn’t in it.

Life had treated her poorly since she was a little girl. She’d learned back then that the numb feeling she’d received by snitching her father’s cocktails went a long way to tolerating his unwelcome touch. Now, it was just easier.

“I remember… It’s between the couch cushions,” she muttered, swayed to the sofa, and ripped it apart. She came up with the half emptied quart, unscrewed the top, and took a long deep swallow. “Ah! Now for work.” But instead of making it to the shower, she plopped down on the denuded couch, swigged again, and passed out. The last thing she thought was, “I’m getting fired today anyway…”
