Jill found herself sitting on a rock in the middle of the
woods. Her tear streaked face and dirty exterior showed the journey she’d made
since dawn. She’d searched the area around and behind her home in the hills of Tennessee,
looking for her companion, friend, and confidant. Charlie the cocker spaniel
had been missing since last night. The worst had been considered.
She was exhausted. The sun was high in the sky and hot. Jill
had removed her lavender sweater, contemplating her next move. “Oh, Charlie
where are you? We’ve been together thirteen years now and I can’t lose you.
That’s our whole lives,” she sniffled.
After catching her breath, she tied the sweater around her
waist and slid off the rock to the black dirt of the mountain. “Charlie! Come
on Charlie, where are you?” she called loudly. It was dead quiet not even the
birds chirped as she stumbled along. After a while she heard a whimper.
“Charlie? Is that you Charlie?” she perked up and sped toward the noise.
She reached a rock formation that surrounded a small patch
of dirt, big enough for a small dog to have fallen into. Jill climbed over the
top and peered into it. A scared black and white dog too exhausted to bark or
jump high enough to escape lay in the bottom. “Here you are Charlie!” Jill exhaled,
climbing down into the crevasse. She wrapped him in her purple sweater and
cuddled him close. He nuzzled her. His nails were broken and his feet were
bloody, but he’d be okay with some food, water, and a lot of TLC. Jill hurried
home with Charlie in her arms and a smile on her face.
