A Stroll Through the Park
After receiving a call on her cell phone, from the opposite
end of the wooded park, a mother and her new infant, hustle down the path
between the trees and brush. She hardly noticed the fallen leaves on this brisk
fall morning. Her senses were heightened and the goose pimples stood up on her
arms as she casually glanced back over her shoulder at regular intervals.
“Little Joey, it’s a beautiful day! We are going to see
daddy. He just arrived and is meeting us in the square,” she said cheerfully,
looking quickly behind her. She picked up her pace to an easy jog. The pram
rumbled over loose leaves, sticks, and rocks. Little Joey began to fuss.
“It’s okay, shush, we’ll be there soon,” the mother
whispered. Joey continued to get louder and his mother became more uneasy. She
could feel the eyes watching them from the shadows, but didn’t know what to
make of it. Her steps quickened. She fumbled with her phone, glancing over her
shoulder more frequently. She stumbled. The phone flipped out of her hand and
landed in the carriage, hitting Joey on the forehead, which caused him to scream
louder.
She heard the brush crackle behind her, turned, and saw
nothing. “Oh… what am I freaking out about? I’ve been down this path a hundred
times. Kenneth where are you? In Iraq as usual…,” she groaned.
Just then she heard the growl of a large cat. She turned to
see a mountain lion bearing down on her and Joey. She screamed. Kenneth was at
her side pushing her out of the way of the charging beast. A loud pop blasted.
The cat fell at his feet. She leaped into his arms.
“I was anxious to see you two, so I came to see what was
taking so long,” he smiled casually. She closed her eyes and melted into his
embrace.
