Hurry Up and Wait

Daily Writing Prompt http://bit.ly/1Q4vc8X

Hurry Up and Wait
I fought back the tears that filled my eyes, inhaled deeply, and squeezed my eyes shut. When I opened them again, I saw the tail end of… something; a person, an animal, or bird, scurrying across the road in front of my car. “What’s that? Ah! Look out!”
My right leg smashed the brake pedal to the floor. I feared it would punch through to the asphalt. Brakes squealed! The car spun! I felt a surge of energy course through my body. An excitement I hadn’t felt in a while, until finally, the car came to a bumpy halt. When the dust cleared, I was facing the opposite direction. Behind me the offending Kit fox had escaped unharmed into the field.
“Great, what did they teach in driving school? Don’t swerve to miss a critter in the road,” I asked and answered my own question. “Hmm….” I coughed. “Well no harm done, this time,” I sighed, easing the gas pedal down. The rear wheels spun.
“Maybe I spoke too soon,” muttering, I stepped out to survey the damage.
“Damn, the left rear wheel is dangling in an irrigation ditch,” I grumbled, taking a turn around the car. “It looks simple enough. With my super-strength I can lift it out of the ditch.  No problem!”
“There, good as new!” I strutted, brushing my hands on my pant legs. But as the weight came to rest on the rear axle, I heard a strange squeaking noise, followed by a loud pop, and then a crash to the ground. The right side tire and wheel lay on its face, flat on the ground under the weight of the car.
“The axle is broken! Grrreat!”
I leaned over the console and stretched under the passenger seat in search of my cell phone. I slid it open. “Even better! No cell service!” I said, tossing it back on the seat.
I leaned against the door, folded my arms across my chest, and stared into the bright blue sky, then up and down the road. No cars! Nothing but empty fields, tumbleweeds, and cows. I slid to the ground in the shade of the car to wait for my knight in shining armor to save me.
“This is a perfect end to a lousy day,” my anger ridden anguish screamed. I rested my forehead on my forearms, sighed, and continued reminiscing with Kate.
