Sermon of Love

The Methodist priest gazed out from the pulpit. Sitting in the audience sat two young ladies, in not so modest clothes, chatting back and forth, and being generally disrespectful. They giggled openly. The people around them looked uncomfortable and were paying more attention to the girls than they were the sermon.

The priest hesitated for a moment, looked up from his notes, and began to tell a story. “I would like for all of you to meet my daughter, Kari and her make-up artist, Joey. It has been learned recently that Kari…” he stopped his story and thought about whether he should continue. Kari stared at him in disbelief. He cleared his throat, “Kari was conceived under less than admirable conditions,” he stopped to catch his breath. “We adopted her minutes after she was born… t-the g-greatest d-day of my life,” he slowed to wipe the tear that trickled from his eye. “She is angry that we never told her…”

“How do you tell someone that an event driven by hate…,” he wiped more tears, “led to the greatest day of my life? Your mother and I love you! We never told you, not because we were ashamed, but because there was no need to make you hurt for something you had no control over. Just like in my sermon… There are many times in life that we ask, ‘why did I have to experience such pain?’ And we have no answer, but if we love enough the good, reward, or happiness will show itself.”

Kari ran up to the altar and her father’s waiting arms.
