Lost and Forgotten

Lost in the forest, Tina wandered aimlessly about, searching for something familiar to lead her in the right direction. She’d been with the clan since she was a small child. Some not very nice things had been done to her and last night she’d overheard her captors talking.

“You know you can’t keep her. She never produced an offspring and she’s becoming too old for you to control,” the old haggard woman spoke from behind the flames of a fire.

“Tina was very good when she was small, but she is becoming troublesome; fighting, biting and uncooperative. Makes her undesirable,” the gruff, thin man concluded. “You’re right it’s time to replace her.” 

“What’s your plan?”

“We’ll just leave her! She’ll never find her way out and by dark it will be so cold… Well you get the picture.”

And by morning when Tina awoke, they were gone. She assumed they’d slipped out in the middle of the night. Her coat and gloves were still in the hollow log, where she’d stashed them the night before and the rolls she’d hidden at dinner were in her pocket.

It was cold, the ground covered in snow, but she was determined to find help. Before long she happened upon a group of people, about her own age. They were on a school outing. “Will you help me? I’m lost,” she cried. 

“What are you doing out here?” the teacher asked, checking her up and down. “Tony give me that thermos. Oh my goodness, who are you?”

Her life in captivity had ended… Now what?
