Ghost Town

Carrie came off the hill, dirty, thirsty and exhausted. The buildings off in the distance were a welcomed sight. She’d spent days wandering through the forest. For miles everything in sight had been seventy foot tall trees, rough granite rocks, and powdered dirt. She walked and walked until the town got closer and closer. “Man, it’s quiet. You know, come to think of it, I haven’t seen one person coming or going. I don’t hear the hum of engines, the smell of smoke from fireplaces, or taste the grit and dust from this dirt road,” she observed.

Finally Carrie made her way to the outskirts of town. The building on her left was devoid of paint and the boards flapped in the breeze. Further down the road, more of the same greeted her. She noticed a phone booth, “Great!” But when she pulled the receiver off the cradle the cord had been cut. “Where is everybody?” she stuttered. Building after building, grocery store after grocery store, and house after house stood ghostly and devoid of people.

The hair on the back of her neck stood on end. She spun in a circle, seeing nothing. “I’m being watched I can feel it,” her eyes darted this way and that. “My sixth sense is definitely engaged,” she muttered. At that precise moment she was tapped on the shoulder. Carrie jumped internally and slowly turned to see her mother standing behind her.

“Mom? Mom can it really be you?” she gushed and reached to wrap her arms around her, but Carrie stumbled forward when her hand passed right through her mother. Her breathing stopped, her eyes widened, and her mind whirled.

“It’s so nice to be with you again, but it isn’t your time. You must go back and finish your life,” her mother said gently, but intensely.
