Cheating Hurts

Cheating Hurts

“Constance, where’s Edward today? He hasn’t been around much,” her mother commented.
Making another excuse, churned Constance’s stomach. “Mom,” she looked away. “He says he’s ‘working!’ But I know he’s not,” she exhaled loudly.

“Well, if he says he’s working then he must be. He comes from a respectable family and he loves you and the children.”

“Oh, mom, whatever!” Constance mumbled. She’d been dreading the day she had to tell her family that her marriage was over. They didn’t want to hear the truth, but what was she to do? His absences were becoming more obvious.

“Chin up… Let’s go get some lunch. I hear there’s a great new place down on the strip.”
Constance agreed with a shrug, reaching for the two children and buckling them into their car seats. “Edward is such a great provider. You have a beautiful home and a new car. If he was playing around why would he support you this way?”

“A question I have been asking myself… I guess he loves his kids!”

“I hope you are mistaken. Have you asked him?”

Constance turned and gave her that same look she used when she was a child, rolling her eyes.

 BAM!

The baby screamed, but the two year old was silent. “Constance! Constance wake up!”

“Oh my head… What happened?” Constance muttered.

A siren screamed in the distance.

“Constance, I’m the paramedic… Can you hear me?” Constance nodded. “The baby is fine and so is your mother.

“I’m in the front seat with the baby.”

“Eddie appears to have a broken arm. We’ve stabilized it and we think you have a concussion. We’ll be at the ER in about two minutes,” he explained.

“Someone needs to call my husband,” Constance mumbled.

“I’ve already tried... No one seems to know where he is.”

“Try Charlotte, he’s with her,” Constance whispered. “Never mind he won’t…,” she passed out again.
Constance awakened in a pristine white room, in a bed with crisp sheets, and the smell of antiseptic.

“Oh, honey, are you all right?” Constance nodded, clutching her head.

“Where are the children?”

“I didn’t believe he was the liar you said he was, but he came and took the children home… He wouldn’t step foot in your room. I’m so sorry!”
