A Simple Morning

Daily Writing Prompt

A Simple Morning

Willard sat at the round table with an umbrella, staring out onto the busy street at the outdoor café. He’d ordered Faith her favorite coffee, straight up black with no sugar or cream. He enjoyed his, steaming hot with a cube of sugar. The minutes ticked by. “She’s never late, where could she be?” he mumbled to the waitress when she delivered the beverages.

“Oh Faith will be here. She’s probably stuck in that traffic jam everyone is talking about,” the waitress assured him. Willard relaxed. She was only five minutes late, he was being silly. He helped himself to an abandoned newspaper and tried to read. His thoughts raced.

Did she over-sleep? Has she slipped in the tub? I’ve told her a thousand times to put skid strips on the bottom. Maybe her car wouldn’t start. A dead battery that has to be it! He glanced at his watch, five more minutes had passed. The traffic looked thicker than he remembered at this time of day. He shook out the newspaper and began the same story again. Could she have been in a fender bender? Why hasn’t she used her phone to call me? Maybe I ought to give her a call. You know she could have forgotten our date. I’ll just remind her.

Willard picked up his phone, he had her on speed dial. It began to ring. Just then an emergency vehicle weaved its way through the cars, heading toward their apartment. He watched, feeling the hair stand up on the back of his neck. The phone rang for the third time. A police car followed the ambulance along with several more police vehicles.

Willard felt the heat of panic rise through his body and flush his skin. He dropped the paper, dumped the table over, spilling the hot beverages to the ground, and raced through the pedestrians pushing them out of his way.

Gun shots sounded! People raced toward him blocking his advancement. He shoved, punched, and tore his way up the street. He knew in his heart Faith was in danger. At the end of the block red, blue, and yellow lights flashed over a sea of emergency vehicles. Yellow tape stretched from corner to corner. The smell of gunpowder wafted through the air. A helicopter rattled the scene from above.

“My wife, Faith is she in there! What’s happening? You have to let me through!” he screamed at the officer restricting his advancement. More gun shots rang out! Willard stood tall, everyone around him ducked. He saw several women in a group, huddled up against the skyscraper. The windows had been shot out. A person with full riot gear stood over them, holding a machine gun and waving it over the heads of the women.

Willard could see Faith. She had her hand pressed against another woman’s thigh that was lying on the ground. Silent shots flew through the air, knocking the gunman to the ground. Three other gunman fell at the same time in various stations on the block. The police moved in, taking control of the stand-off. Faith was escorted toward a panel truck.

“Faith!” Faith!” Willard yelled, jumping up and down. She looked up. He could see that her face was stained with tears and grime, but she was walking under her own power. She gave him a little wave and blew him a kiss.

“You can meet her at the station,” the officer explained. Willard sighed as he returned to his car. Faith looked to be alright, relief flooded him as he said a little prayer and made the long drive downtown. Who would have thought, a coffee date could have led to such anxiety.
