Outlines?

Daily Writing Prompt

Outlines?
I disagree that an outline allows you to be more creative. I find them stifling. Following an outline from point to point bottles up the free flowing adventure of the story for me. I live my stories, seeing each step and breath that my characters take in their journey. Outlines are too planed and don’t allow for the protagonist to fly by the seat of his/her pants while seeking his solutions.

So, I don’t use an outline.  I sometimes jot down chapter titles and write each chapter, adding some and removing others, but for the most part I write a beginning, build to the climax, and finish it off. When I have the story out of my head and on paper I go back and fill in the missing pieces.

I don’t believe there is a correct way to write a story. Whatever works for the writer is how they should tell their story. I do know if I had to make outlines, my stories would get lost in the monotony of the structure.

Apologies Come in Many Forms

Daily Writing Prompt http://bit.ly/1QyWhXk

Apologies Come in Many Forms

Paul laid awake, twisting and turning in his bed. Rehashing the vicious argument he’d had with his little sister over her new boyfriend. He knew his point of view was right. Rodney was trouble. But he hadn’t given her a chance to plead her case. He’d jumped right into grounding her and now he wished he’d asked more questions.

He hadn’t asked for this parenting gig and sure wished he didn’t have to play the role of father. It had been hard enough to be the oldest brother to five siblings, but with his mother working two jobs he was responsible for watching the kids.

“How did my life get away from me? Last year, before Dad was killed, I was looking down the throat of a basketball scholarship to University. Today, I’m chewing out my little sister for going to the prom with a class A trouble maker,” he grumbled. Paul stretched and sighed. “Dad, why did you stop to help that girl with the flat tire?” He swiped his hand through his hair and rolled over. “I know why…? Cause you were a great man, someone I hope to emulate someday.”

The front door opened and closed and the light in the kitchen clicked on. Paul jumped out of bed. “She’s home,” he exhaled, relieved. He left his room and casually entered the kitchen. Sally was standing in front of the open refrigerator door, staring at the food inside. She turned when she heard Paul enter the room.  She charged into his arms with tears in her eyes. Paul held her tightly against his chest. “I love you,” he whispered into her hair.

“I love you too! Don’t be mad at me! It’s really not what you think,” she held up an envelope with his name on it. Paul looked at her curiously. “Open it,” she smiled. He stuck his finger under the flap, “You know, Rodney’s dad is the coach for University. I made Rodney a deal… If I went to the dance with him, he would set up a meeting with his dad so I could explain our situation. He’s granted you a tryout and if he likes you, he will offer you the scholarship.”

His mother came around the corner, “And you, my son, will attend the tryout, win the scholarship, and this family will be just fine,” she said.

Paul looked them in the eyes, his vision blurred as he hugged both of them tightly. “I won’t let you down, thank you,” he choked.
