The Pirate Ship, Stephanie

Captain James Hardy met me on the deck of the beautiful teak railed sailing vessel. He led me aft where a grizzled man sat honing a six inch blade. “Quartermaster meet our newest member of the crew, Trevor Brady. He is going to be performing the duties of cabin boy. Explain it to him.”
“Aye, Captain! I be Rogers, second in com’and. Ye be takin orders from me as well.” The Quartermaster led me down a flight of stairs next to the galley, where there was a small space between the barrels of grog and other food supplies.
“This’s where ye’ll make berth, an’ stow yer things in this here duffle,” he said, tossing me an old musty-smelling canvas bag. I tied the coins I’d just earned in the pocket of my breeches so that I wouldn’t lose them, then wrapped my mother’s Bible in the only clean shirt I owned, and stowed it in the duffle. I wedged it between two of the barrels that defined my living space.
“Notice this ‘ere ship ‘as three sails, which makes us able to maneuver and gives us speed. The Mizzen-mast ‘ere on the poop-deck is smaller than the Main-mast ‘ere in the center and the Fore-mast is up front on the bow,” he said, pointing out each sail. I looked up, following the center pole to the crow’s nest some sixty feet above my head.
“The Cap’ain’s cabin’s behind this ‘ere door. Ye’ll find the nautical instruments and charts in thar. Never question the Cap’ain’s orders and don’t handle the instruments. The officers sometimes eat with Cap’ain Hardy at his table,” he said, pointing to the stern.
The Quartermaster led me toward the bow where a figurehead of a naked lady with a fish's tail led the way. She was solid wood and stretched from above the rail to the water. I assumed a mermaid from the legends I’d heard.
“The foc’scle is over thar, beyond the fore-mast, and the crew’s quarters are below.” He then led me below decks, showing me the cannon chamber and further down, the storage compartments. The belly of the ship was stocked with various supplies. I saw a heavy wooden door with a large key lock and wondered if that was where they stored the sugarcane. I followed the Quartermaster topside, and into the waning daylight.
“Get some sleep, Brady. We sail at firs’ light.”
The next morning I emerged from below deck in time to see the colors being hoisted into place. The death head flag flew high above my head. I felt the blood drain into my toes… I’d signed to sail aboard a pirate ship.
The above ship is an excerpt taken from my novel… 2ND CHANCES: A BOOK OF CHOICES by TD Cooper
