Fire Strikes

“What is ringing?” (cough)(cough) Maria’s eyes drowsily opened to the odor of smoke. It was billowing up from under the door. “Fire! We’re on fire!” she screamed. “Mom! Dad! Somebody help!” Her heart pounded inside her chest. (cough)(cough) She ran for the door and clasped the brass knob. It burned almost taking her skin off. “Ouch!” she cried. (cough)(cough) She was breathing in more smoke than clean air, her eyes were stinging, and the room was getting hotter.

“Maria over here!” she heard a neighbors voice at the window. Mr. Paul had broken the windowpane and called to her to come to him. She climbed through and he carried her to the ambulance that was just pulling up. They immediately put an oxygen mask over her mouth and nose. It helped some.

“Where’s mom?” she asked, tears rolling down her smoke blackened cheeks.

“They’re getting them out now. Your dad went back in to get your brother and the dog,” he explained softly. Maria’s anxiety grew until she saw them all appear through the back yard gate. The EMT’s tended to her entire family including the dog who required some oxygen and a bandage.
