Special Friends

Daily Writing Prompt

SPECIAL FRIENDS

“Let’s play!” a girls voice giggled.

Four-year-old Jack sat coyly on the floor, flicking puzzle pieces into the air.

“Come with me let’s play!” Jack got off the tile.

“Where are you going Jack?” his mother asked.

“The doorbell is ringing,” Jack said.

“No, it’s not…!” Mother said as the doorbell chimed. Jack ran for the front door. “Wait for me,” she said, hurrying after him.

Jack stood patiently as his mother unlocked the deadbolt and twisted the knob. The door swung open to an empty stoop. Jack giggled. His mother stepped out onto the porch. “Jack, there’s no one here… Strange!”

“Yes, momma, can I go out to play?” Jack asked, smiling.

“With who? Not out front…” his mother felt shivers creep through her arms. She closed the door and re-locked everything. “Jack, don’t answer this door. I believe a prankster is ringing the doorbell.”

Back in the house, Jack continued to giggle and talk. Mother watched and admired his imagination to create a friend. She assumed he was pretending to play with a classmate. After an hour, mother heard the deadbolt click and the front door open and close. She ran to the door thinking Jack had gone outside, but he stood blank faced, staring at the closed door. The deadbolt was unlocked and she could see where the rug had crumpled and stuck between the threshold and door.

“Jack can you reach the deadbolt?” Mother asked, confused and knowing full well, he couldn’t touch the top of the door.

“Caroline had to go home,” Jack said.

“Caroline?”

“Yeah, her mother said it was dinner time. Can she come over tomorrow? We had fun today!” Jack smiled and ran to his room.

His mother stared after him, full of questions, but not sure how to ask them.

A Chance Encounter

DAILY WRITING PROMPT

Write about how you met your partner, but set it on another planet or in a different era.

A Chance Encounter

The endless voyage of storms, salty water, and rats made me pray for death. The pirate captain, my captor, left me in the rotten, smelling cargo hold where I wallowed in vomit and human waste. Retching became normal though nothing remained in my stomach nor on my bones and feeding the rats, the bugs I’d picked from my once striking bronze locks, held no amusement. I held no hope that my father could pay the ransom much less that I’d survive the crossing.

“Miss Joyce! Miss Joyce, please don’t be dead!” the quartermaster's voice rose above the thunder and lightning. I opened an eye. The handsome face of the only kind man on this god-forsaken ship stared back at me. Today his sandy, blonde hair hung in strings, dripping with rain and seawater. Blood drooled from a gash on his forehead and seeped around his sea blue eyes. My eye closed erasing the image of the once magnificent man that brought me food and water when no one else bothered. I moaned, blacking out.

The Quartermaster’s rippled chest and muscular arms carried me to the ship's edge. With no strength to fight him, I stared into the gray clouds. “Is this it? Is this how I will die? Please don’t let me suffer. A ball to my brain… First!” I whispered.

A chuckle gurgled deep in his throat as a new set of hands hoisted me into the longboat. I watched as we floated away from the pirate ship that had caused me so much pain. Fresh water dribbled over my lips and a blanket wrapped my shoulders in warmth.

“Joyce, we may drown before we reach land, but our best chance of survival lay off the ship,” his husky voice whispered in my ear as I passed out, again.

I awoke once in the dead of night, long enough to witness the bright round moon peek out from behind a cloud. By morning, the longboat scraped against the sand.

Our struggle had only just begun, for the next thirty years we’d spend our lives together on a small deserted island. Bryce never left my side.

True Love is When...

DAILY WRITING PROMPT: True love is when…

I should’ve posted this on Valentine’s Day, but I figured ‘Better Late than Never’.

“True love means different things to every person,” Marisol recited her English essay. The class sat silent, each rehearsing their own speech to the class in their minds. Marisol knew few were listening, but she continued with a sigh.

“My mom and dad were married twenty-eight years ago. They fight, sometimes they’ll sleep in different rooms, and they even stop talking for a couple of days, but they always forgive. Do they have true love?” Marisol spoke, looking across the room. Every classmate's eyes looked at their own papers. Marisol paused, considering her next words. “I could rattle on, explaining the different stereotypical loves, puppy, infatuations, teenage, physical, and the other labels people love to use. But none of these loves are true love.” Two students paused and looked at her ready to argue.

“True Love is a basic–uncomplicated love. A love that allows a person to grow, to learn, and to love in return. True love means you give yourself to another person as long as that other person reciprocates. There should be respect in love, communication, and an ability to walk away if the loved person’s best interest is that need. True love has no jealousy, no possession, and no control over another person.” Marisol persevered, slowing to catch her breath. Most of the class was now listening.

“I’ve seen true love, and it was in my grandparents. They fell in love while in high school, like us… kids, but grandpa went to war as soon as they graduated. Grandma kissed him goodbye, Grandpa promised to come home safe. Grandma waited, writing him letters every day, and grandpa wrote back occasionally, professing his loyalty and love.” A tear crept into her eye. “Months passed, and grandma hadn’t heard from grandpa. So, she called. Grandma found him in a VA Hospital. Grandpa refused to see her or talk to her, asking the staff to relay his message, ‘Forget me! I’m half a man and you deserve a whole man’. Grandma refused, sneaking her way into the hospital. Unbeknownst to anyone, grandma nursed grandpa back to health.” Marisol sniffed.

“Grandpa didn’t come home safe, he came home wounded, he had burns over sixty percent of his body. His head bandaged for six months with nothing but his nose and mouth exposed, grandma took care of him. Grandpa didn’t know it was grandma. Oh, he suspected, and he hoped. Grandma's love gave him the hope and love he needed to live,” Marisol stuttered with a hiccup.

“Grandma and grandpa married within the year and are still together to this day. They walk together silently, holding hands; grandma has been his wife, lover, confidant, and even his eyes for sixty-five years and grandpa has partnered with her every step of the way. You see love doesn’t care if you’re beautiful or perfect. True love insists that you love unconditionally, with purity and truth.” Marisol left the podium with tears dripping off her lashes and the entire room watching her every movement, nodding.

To Be Loved or Respected?

To Be Loved or Respected?

I haven’t written a writing prompt in a while. I’ve had my head wrapped in writing the second book in my series, 2nd Chances: A Book of Choices. However, the division of today’s women has given me pause to consider.

To answer the question respect or love? I chose respect and here’s why. If a woman has respect, she’s looked upon with decency, intelligence, and as a role model. I believe presenting one’s self with decorum, projects to the world… You’re not a person to be toyed with, you’re confident in yourself, and you have strength.

When a woman dresses up in disgusting costumes, unwashed clothes, writes foul words on her person, and carries signs of the same, she loses the significance of the message. That’s not what a woman is. A woman brings beauty to the world. Whether she’s a CEO, a representative of government, protector of animals, steward of the environment, a mother, or student, she is the goodness, the multi-tasker, the heart of a nation.

As we, strive for respect and achieve it, we WILL BE LOVED, because we all love successful, strong people and want to emulate them.
