Daily Writing Prompt
SPECIAL FRIENDS
“Let’s play!” a girls voice giggled.
Four-year-old Jack sat coyly on the floor, flicking
puzzle pieces into the air.
“Come with me let’s play!” Jack got off the tile.
“Where are you going Jack?” his mother asked.
“The doorbell is ringing,” Jack said.
“No, it’s not…!” Mother said as the doorbell chimed. Jack
ran for the front door. “Wait for me,” she said, hurrying after him.
Jack stood patiently as his mother unlocked the
deadbolt and twisted the knob. The door swung open to an empty stoop. Jack
giggled. His mother stepped out onto the porch. “Jack, there’s no one here…
Strange!”
“Yes, momma, can I go out to play?” Jack asked,
smiling.
“With who? Not out front…” his mother felt shivers
creep through her arms. She closed the door and re-locked everything. “Jack,
don’t answer this door. I believe a prankster is ringing the doorbell.”
Back in the house, Jack continued to giggle and talk.
Mother watched and admired his imagination to create a friend. She assumed he
was pretending to play with a classmate. After an hour, mother heard the deadbolt
click and the front door open and close. She ran to the door thinking Jack had
gone outside, but he stood blank faced, staring at the closed door. The
deadbolt was unlocked and she could see where the rug had crumpled and stuck
between the threshold and door.
“Jack can you reach the deadbolt?” Mother asked, confused
and knowing full well, he couldn’t touch the top of the door.
“Caroline had to go home,” Jack said.
“Caroline?”
“Yeah, her mother said it was dinner time. Can she come
over tomorrow? We had fun today!” Jack smiled and ran to his room.
His mother stared after him, full of questions, but not
sure how to ask them.
