If I Had Ten Days to Prepare for My
Final Day on Earth, What Would I Do?
Cara awoke early, in a room frigid with
cold air, enough to see her breath wafting across her face. A note fluttered
through the air and landed on her chest. “You have ten days left! Make the most
of them…!”
After screaming, crying, and finding
no explanation she took the warning to heart. "What to do first?"
She dressed, grabbed her keys, and
flew out the door. The mall hadn’t opened, but Cara paced outside the front
door until it did. For the next eight hours she shopped and shopped, picking
out the perfect, memorable gift for each person on her Christmas list. She
raced home, scoured the attic for the leftover Christmas paper, and wrapped
them for next year’s Christmas. Cara stacked every package in among the
Christmas decorations, finishing in time to meet her husband at the front door
as he came in from work.
The next morning, she woke early,
pulled out her video camera, and prepared videos for her children and
grandchildren to enjoy on their birthdays. She wished them, ‘Happy Day’, for
each year and gave them insight to her life at their ages.
Eight days from the end Cara
designated her special treasures to each person she wished to have a remembrance
of her.
On days six and seven, she and her
husband climbed in the car and rode to their special place, spending two intimate
days together.
With five days left. she again was
up with the birds, doing the laundry, cleaning, and ironing. She joined her
friends for a long lunch where she laughed and cried for most of the afternoon.
Four days out… She spent it
cherishing time with her children doing the normal mother/daughter errands,
lunch, and gossip they enjoyed throughout their lives.
Three days from the end, The
grandchildren spent the day with Cara at the movies. After, they played games,
read stories and loved each other.
Two more days… Cara made peace with
God.
The day before… Cara gathered the
people she loved the most, together. They sat by the pool in the bright sunshine
while the grandkids swam. They laughed and talked, of the days gone by and the
new ones to come. Ending the evening with pizza and lots of hugs.
This day she met her mother and
grandmother, again!
Cara rubbed her eyes, yawned and
stretched. “Man what a nightmare!” she murmured. “Who wants to plan the final
ten days of their life? Maybe that was a warning to live life, enjoy family,
friends, and to be thankful to God,” she said out loud. “And whoever is
listening, I get the message.”
