Winter Becomes Summer?!

Daily Writing Prompt

Winter Becomes Summer?!

My snowboard sat in the corner of my room. I’d gotten it out of storage in November with great anticipation for the snow covered slopes. My friends and I put a pool together for the date the ski resorts would open. There was enough money for the winner to have a free day at the Winter Wonderland Resort. We waited, each day praying for snow.

Christmas came and went. The first time in history we didn’t open presents with icicles hanging from the eaves. I stared out the window watching the rain fall, sighing when mom handed me my stocking. Inside was a gift certificate for a lift pass to the resort. “The season is half over and the mountain hasn’t even opened,” I complained.

“Be patient!” she smiled.

New Year’s Eve approached with the promise of a huge storm. I knew I’d be boarding all day. I went to bed watching the first flakes of snow sticking to the ground, but the next morning I awoke to streams of water running down the street. My heart sank.

February came and went with a little snow here and there, but not enough to ski on. March was wet and by the first day of spring we all agreed to take our bets back and the pool was absolved. I packed up my board and put it back in storage and pulled out my water-ski.

“There’s always next year,” Bobby had said. I agreed, but was visibly disappointed.
It was the first day of summer, my friends and I were planning to spend the entire day at the lake. I was busy preparing to leave when Mom came in the door from her garden. “My tomato plants froze last night. They were just setting fruit. All gone!” she said, shaking her head. “Where are you going?”

“To the lake!” I said indignantly.

“Better wear your snow clothes,” she chuckled.

“Not funny mom!” I barked, racing for the window. I gasped when I saw a foot of fresh snow on the ground and it was still falling. The summer squall, last night, had turned into a full blown winter storm. “Have I died and been reborn on a different planet?” I exhaled. “What is going on with this crazy year of weather?”
