The Shack

Daily Writing Prompt http://bit.ly/1Ls07j8

The Shack
As a kid I’d often wondered about the old shack that sat lopsided on top of the hill outside of town. My mom had given me strict instructions to stay away from it. She supposed a strong wind would blow it off the mountain and with my luck, I’d be inside when that happened. But every day when I walked to school my curiosity nagged at me to just peek in the window.

I’d imagined a magical being living within the faded, weather worn walls. Something that could wander through town unseen. He or they, I wasn’t sure, must be kind of like overseers, protecting the townspeople. After all how many times had strange things happened that no one could explain? My mom thought I was a daydreamer and laughed when I told her my thoughts.

On this particular afternoon, I noticed the front door hanging open on the shack. That was strange because I’d never seen anyone near it and everyone I knew was afraid to go up the hill. Most people believed as my mother did.

“Go straight home… I’ll be there in a few,” I said to my little brother, turning around and trotting up the street.

“What are you doing?” he groaned, exhaling loudly. I’d already climbed half way up to the shack before he figured it out. “You better not be going up that hill. Mom will be mad!” I ignored him. “I’m telling!” he screamed and ran toward our house.

“Fine!” I had to see inside. It was now or never and with the door open, this was my best opportunity.

I knocked. No answer. “Is anyone home?” No answer. I held my breath, stepping onto the threshold, and rubbing my sweaty palms together. “My name is Constance. You left your door open. Is everything alright?”

The silence screamed for me to stop, but I put it in the back of my mind and took another step inside. I could see the daylight coming through the slats of the walls. My eyes caught sight of a strange looking pig head that was missing a fang, hanging on the wall. Bookcases filled with books and loose papers took up the space of another wall and an ancient typewriter with missing keys sat on a desk in the corner. Loose papers began to flutter in the breeze. The silence turned into whistling as the wind picked up, causing the single sheets of paper to whiz around the room. The shack swayed around me. I gasped, hearing nothing but my mother’s voice. I spun around and blocking my exit was a small, hairy thing in a scarlet bikini.

I gulped in air as fast as I could, not remembering anything else. One minute I was looking down at a creature and the next I was waking up on my own front porch with my mom fanning me with a paper plate and several pairs of eyes staring down at me.
