The Day After Christmas

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR! My Christmas story to you.

The Day After Christmas
The day after Christmas, the coals lay cold in the hearth, likewise no scent from hot cocoa or fresh baked cookies filled the air. Nor did the tree lights glimmer and the star’s shine had gone dim. The multitude of stockings hung empty from the mantle and not a wrapped package lay forgotten.
The day before the house buzzed with employees, neighbors, and family. They celebrated the biggest day of their year. The toys built, packages wrapped, loaded, and delivered. The elves came to the great hall and waited for their fearless leader to return. And return he did with a huge smile and a boisterous laugh.
With the team stabled and fed, the party began. Singing, eating, and presents flowed throughout the day until late into the night. Santa Claus collapsed onto the chaise lounge, his belly full and exhausted. Santa closed his eyes and then startled awake by a tap on the shoulder.
“Go to bed, Kris. You’ve earned a nice long rest,” Mrs. Claus said.
“I’m sorry. I sat for but a moment. What time do you have?” Santa apologized.
“Most of the elves retired hours ago. I will wake you when the sun rises in the spring.” Mrs. Claus grinned and gently pushed Santa toward their living quarters.
“Come, Mrs. Claus. I’m tired enough to sleep until this time next year,” the Jolly Old Elf said, taking Jessica by the hand and leading her into the hall.
“Oh, Kris, I have this mess to clean before I can rest. Your suit needs cleaning, and it’s the morning of December 26th. If I start now, I’ll have the costume finished by tomorrow,” Mrs. Claus giggled, pulling her hand from Santa’s.
“I’ll get the elves to help,” Santa chuckled.
“No, no, they’ve been working non-stop for nine months. You go ahead.”
“A better woman, does not exist.” Santa kissed Jessica good night in front of the Christmas Tree, throwing the magic dust into the air, and snapping his fingers three times. When Jessica left Santa’s embrace, the workshop was spotless, with the dishes stacked in the cupboard, and the lights on the tree put out.
“Oh, Santa, you never cease to amaze. I’ll race you to the bedroom,” Jessica tittered, pulling Santa back into the hall, closing the door.
“Woo-hoo! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone!” Santa shouted.

Ten Days to Live...

This story has been viewed more than any on my blog. I thought I'd re-post it for your enjoyment. It comes from a writing prompt

If I Had Ten Days to Prepare for My Final Day on Earth, What Would I Do?

Cara awoke early, in a room frigid with cold air, enough to see her breath wafting across her face. A note fluttered through the air and landed on her chest. “You have ten days left! Make the most of them…!”

After screaming, crying, and finding no explanation she took the warning to heart. "What to do first?"

She dressed, grabbed her keys, and flew out the door. The mall hadn’t opened, but Cara paced outside the front door until it did. For the next eight hours she shopped and shopped, picking out the perfect, memorable gift for each person on her Christmas list. She raced home, scoured the attic for the leftover Christmas paper, and wrapped them for next year’s Christmas. Cara stacked every package in among the Christmas decorations, finishing in time to meet her husband at the front door as he came in from work.

The next morning, she woke early, pulled out her video camera, and prepared videos for her children and grandchildren to enjoy on their birthdays. She wished them, ‘Happy Day’, for each year and gave them insight to her life at their ages.

Eight days from the end Cara designated her special treasures to each person she wished to have a remembrance of her.

On days six and seven, she and her husband climbed in the car and rode to their special place, spending two intimate days together.

With five days left. she again was up with the birds, doing the laundry, cleaning, and ironing. She joined her friends for a long lunch where she laughed and cried for most of the afternoon.

Four days out… She spent it cherishing time with her children doing the normal mother/daughter errands, lunch, and gossip they enjoyed throughout their lives.

Three days from the end, The grandchildren spent the day with Cara at the movies. After, they played games, read stories and loved each other.

Two more days… Cara made peace with God.

The day before… Cara gathered the people she loved the most, together. They sat by the pool in the bright sunshine while the grandkids swam. They laughed and talked, of the days gone by and the new ones to come. Ending the evening with pizza and lots of hugs.

This day she met her mother and grandmother, again!

Cara rubbed her eyes, yawned and stretched. “Man what a nightmare!” she murmured. “Who wants to plan the final ten days of their life? Maybe that was a warning to live life, enjoy family, friends, and to be thankful to God,” she said out loud. “And whoever is listening, I get the message.”
